A Word About Alfred NY by Sherry Volk

"Nestled away 'mid the Empire State hills,"  as the Alma Mater of Alfred University begins, the Village of Alfred lies in a high valley in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.  Trending north to south, the village is home to 1500 permanent residents with a yearly influx of four to five thousand students who attend its two colleges.  Located in otherwise rural country, the village is a center of education and culture with a cosmopolitan flavor that belies its size. Home to a rare and lovely Old World carillon, it is world-renowned for its history of ceramic industry, research, and education.

Main Street and some of the side streets flaunt lovely examples of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century architecture, while the two schools, Alfred University, a private institution, and Alfred State College, a highly regarded division of the State University of New York (SUNY) face each other across the valley.

Access to larger centers with many opportunities is relatively easy, leaving the Town (population outside of the Village, 1500) and the surrounding areas free of heavy industry and commerce.  It is a retreat, a delight, a haven, to those who prefer a quiet life with many opportunities to explore the verdant hills on foot, in a car, or on a bike.

Homes and businesses blend into the landscape of the area's beautiful rolling hills. Local state lands offer hiking & skiing trails where one can enjoy the scenic beauty that enhances the community we call home.
